Platform : Larissa De Jesús Negrón

In her latest body of work for Platform, multidisciplinary artist Larissa De Jesús Negrón continues her exploration of human emotion, specifically through the lens of contemporary womanhood. These works depict solitary female figures that are largely autobiographical in their representation of deeply personal narratives.

Initially, Larissa’s work focused on the depiction of space and place but since the pandemic, her work has turned to the body and facial expressions, and their co-existence within a space, to tell the story of a moment in time. The notion of the interior permeates, despite often not being literally depicted, through the conveyance of psycho-analytic introspection. As a Latina woman, Larissa has spoken of her experience of misogyny and so the works naturally speak to a reflection of the shared female experience. 

Larissa’s artistic practice is a result of deep internal self-reflection and meditation, using the image-making process to work through emotional trauma. The resulting image is a portrayal of the artist’s emotional state, with her spontaneous and rapid painting process allowing her to be in touch with unconscious thoughts and stay present. Some works portray hints of traditionally feminine spaces of the home such as the bedroom and the bathroom. Shower scenes are a recurring motif, with water droplets alluding to the fluidity of thought and introspection. 

Through an exploration of authentic outer expression of innermost thoughts, Larissa’s newest body of work conveys deeply psychological and intimate moments that depict a personal history, whilst also communicating a larger, shared experience of human emotion.

Larissa De Jesús Negrón (b.1994) was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and has lived in several municipalities such as Guaynabo, Trujillo Alto and Caguas. Larissa graduated from The School of Plastic Arts in Old San Juan where she began majoring in Drawing and Painting. After two years, she transferred to Hunter College in NYC where she got her BFA degree with high honors in 2017. Larissa has exhibited across the USA and Internationally with notable exhibitions including TWENTYFOUR at Bricks Gallery, Copenhagen (2021), DM Me at Kravets Wehby Gallery, New York (2021) and Summer Summer Group Show at Ross and Kramer, New York (2021).
