Roswell Boy is a portrait of a boy who shot two of his classmates at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell (where Hagler currently lives). The work hung in the Frazier schoolhouse nearby which meant that everything from the shooting, to the making of the work, to displaying it, all happened on two parallel roads in one small area. The ubiquity of these events entails a sense of localised inevitability: wherever you are in America, you’re not far from a place in which a shooting has occurred.
